Not as big as the Hindenburg, but hopefully a lot safer

The Goodyear blimps have been around for decades. I'm surprised it has taken this long to considering branching out and using these things for other purposes.

Issues and Insights ran a poll, and half of all Democrats want to be rid of President Biden

If you've lost your own party members, maybe you have a problem. Just a thought.

Medicine continues to take a turn for the worse, becoming less human. What is happening in the UK is on schedule to start happening here, although it may take another decade.

Safer?  Of course.  Just don't forget your ticket.

From the confused information that's coming out, it seems to me that, yes, Hamas is being defeated in detail for the very first time.  So that's good.

The question then is: What comes next?

The Hindenburg exploded because it was filled with hydrogen, which is highly flammable.  Helium, which is what fills the Goodyear blimps, is not flammable---but it was rare and expensive prior to WWII.  Today, of course, helium is both cheap and common; it is used in kiddie balloons, whereas prior to WWII such balloons were filled with the same highly-flammable hydrogen as caused the destruction of the Hindenburg.  See, e.g., this old HR Belloc "Cautionary Verse":

George

Who played with a dangerous toy and suffered a catastrophe of considerable dimensions.

—HR Belloc

When George’s Grandmamma was told

That George had been as good as Gold,

She promised, in the Afternoon

To buy him an Immense BALLOON.

And so she did; but when it came,

It got into the candle flame,

And being of a dangerous sort

Exploded with a loud report!

The Lights went out! The Windows broke!

The Room was filled with reeking smoke,

And in the darkness shrieks and yells

Were mingled with Electric Bells,

And falling masonry, and groans,

And crunching, as of broken bones,

And dreadful shrieks, when, worst of all,

The House itself began to fall!

It tottered, shuddering to and fro,

Then crashed into the street below—

Which happened to be Savile Row.

When Help arrived, among the Dead

Were Cousin Mary, Little Fred,

The Footmen (both of them),

The Groom,

The man that cleaned the Billiard Room,

The Chaplain, and the Still-Room Maid,

And I am dreadfully afraid

That Monsieur Champignon, the Chef,

Will now be permanently deaf—

And both his Aides are much the same;

While George, who was in part to blame,

Received, you will regret to hear,

A nasty lump behind his ear.

MORAL

The moral is that little Boys

Should not be given dangerous Toys.

Except my understanding is that it's NOT so cheap any more; costs of helium have skyrocketed (no pun intended) over the past few years.

I will make my comments on airships and hope someone reads them.

Airships need to be large to have enough useful lift, and the structure needs to be extremely light. Today's materials and structures are way better than the 1930's, but still, there is a large structure subject to a lot of external force due to winds and weather. This means it is hard to operate airships in bad weather, limiting their use.

Also, there are problems such as to gain lift, ballast must be dropped; to reduce lift, gas needs to be vented (or some external source of weight added). They take large ground crews to get moored and unmoored.

There are some modern designs that mitigate some of the problems, but not all.

Note advertising blimps only operate in good weather (no one can see the ads in bad weather!).

And blimps are not the same as a rigit airship. The envelope shape is maintained by pressure - pump in or release air as needed (the helium is in separate gas cells).. Damage to the envelope can be repaired easily. Structural damage to the frame of an airship cannot.

I doubt the new airships will really take off. (Pun intended). There are some niche uses but we aren't going to see vast numbers of them.

I can give a whole lecture on airships but another time.

I agree with you.  (Sorry, don't know if you were looking for an argument, a la Monty Python.)

I've seen stories come and go ballyhooing the return of the airship; but their use seems very limited to me.

Tonight a local Chabad rabbi had a Torah teaching class via zoom, so I was preoccupied with higjer material.

The class was largely inspired by the Talmud, and a discussion of whether goat meat or lamb meat is better but used this to illuminate the difference between Yaakov and Eisav. Including why goat skins were used to decieve Yitzchak.

But they won't be kosher and no Jews allowed either.
