The City Journal has an article going over presidential assassination attempts, which is simply an overview without getting into details. The key paragraph is really the last one, but it issues the mark: “The biggest lesson, though, is that American politics has long been contentious, and we all need to watch our public rhetoric. Bob Dole would say on the campaign trail that Bill Clinton was “my opponent and not my enemy,” a formulation worth remembering. Framing our policy differences, however serious, in hysterical terms, as too many Americans have been doing for too long, raises the prospect of extremists or mentally damaged people taking matters into their own hands. We should all hope that yesterday is as bad as it gets.” That is a lovely sentiment but completely ignores the constant rhetoric being spewed by the Democrat-leftist machine. Trump suggested that Hillary should be locked up for multiple crimes; the opposition cannot stop about screaming that Trump is Hitler and should be taken out. The fact that it has taken 9 years for someone to get close enough to make the shots is, in a sense, shocking considering the vitriol spilled about Trump. I cannot help but hope that it is the last attempt, but I doubt it.

Trump told a reporter from the Washington Examiner (who was scheduled to interview him after Saturday’s rally but obviously could not) by phone that he is completely rewriting his convention speech. This could result in a barn burner of a speech and will probably make many more people interested in watching the convention. i expect the MSM will do all in their power to block it. Rarely have the conventions presented an opportunity to become THIS interesting.

From all the scrolling I did over the weekend, the big thing that has given me pause about the events of the weekend is the BBC interview with a man who saw the assassin crawling into place on the roof. He and others around him tried to notify police/SS before any shots could be placed. A police officer went up to the roof to investigate but when the shooter turned his gun on the officer the LEO moved back down, out of the line of fire.
I don’t suggest that was wrong at all. What bothers me is that, at this time, it seems there was no other preventative action taken to address the shooter. I would love to know what ROE were established about potential threats. And I don’t yet have any idea of the timeline between when the police officer went to the roof and when the shooter started firing shots. The shooter might have gotten jumpy and rushed his shots, but we don’t know yet.
I know it is still early. I know Bongino has explained a lot of issues he saw as a former Secret Service officer. But I seriously doubt the investigation is ever going to reveal the truth.

If you were Kamala Harris, would you want to run against Trump after this weekend? Would anyone? I don’t think Biden is going away.

Reply to vxbush in 5: That was the only rational outcome. Quite frankly there should be consequences for everyone at DoJ involved in the investigation.

Reply to vxbush in 3: I've seen some reporting on that. There seems, to be some breakdowns in the security plan. Nobody was on the roof the shooter used. It appears local LE was informed of a man with a rifle on the roof. I would suspect a communication issue at this point. As to the report of a officer retreating... that is troubling but I would need more info. The USSS sniper is get some criticism. I still think he did generally the sniper team's area of responsibility is out at longer range. When the shots ring out you can see the sniper stick his head up a little higher and the muzzle drops, I think he's locating the target. As to the shot, it was a cold bore snap shot. They train for this of course but it is a difficult task. His scope is likely set for 300 or 500 yards. The shot was 150. So the sniper made all the calculation on the fly and was on target.

OR--- Regarding your question about something that teaches American history, that might be accessible for a bright fourth-grader, let me recommend that you acquire a copy of the "Variety Music Cavalcade," by Julius Mattfeld. The Cavalcade contains a "Musical Historical Review," which shows the hit songs in America year by year from 1620 on. There are three editions; 1620-1950, 1620-1961, and the last (Mattfeld died shortly after it was published) 1620-1969. The book contains entries for each year showing the top songs of that year, with historical snippets and notations regarding what happened in that year---not only notable political happenings, but what books, plays, and (later) films were issued/popular in that year. It also includes incidents of note like mine disasters, civil unrest, the sinking of the Titanic, etc. Because the book's entries are divided up year by year, it is a great thing to spelunk into; rather than reading lengthy chapters on a particular year, there are two to five pages simply setting forth the incidents of note. The book is readily available, used, online for generally something between $10 and $20, and it is an invaluable and fascinating resource. I sent a copy to Lucius some years back, and have given copies to other friends---one of whom did not look at it for a while, but some months ago said he'd finally done so and found it impossible to put down. I strongly recommend it as an historical reference resource.

Reply to JCM in 9: Trump has chosen JD Vance as his running mate? It seems that Trump has decided to add-Vance, as it were...

I don’t have strong feelings, one way or the other about JD Vance, but I’m cautiously optimistic.
