Good morning. Buzz, to your post last night of: “ It is my understanding that the Germans used Zeppelins rather than, or possibly in addition to, planes when they bombed London in WWI.” They used both. The Zeppelins early in the war, later the “Gotha” bomber. IIRC the latter was particularly alarming because at least initially, the British literally had no defense against it. They had no fighter aircraft or antiaircraft artillery with sufficient ceiling to effectively shoot at them.

Given that Zeppelins were gas-bags filled with highly-flammable hydrogen, I'd think that they would have been relatively easy to shoot down, even with rifles; get a nice hot round zipping through the hydrogen, and bye-bye Zeppelin. If the British were used to defending against Zeppelins, and had not created/deployed antiaircraft guns when the Germans shifted to airplanes, they would surely have been caught flatfooted. Interesting Kipling story, "Mary Postgate," deals with a British civilian confronted with a downed German flier in WWI.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 3: The British finally found an antidote to the Zeppelins when they developed incendiary bullets. Before that time, heavy guns were the best defense. Even so, in the absence of any kind of effect HA fire control, Zeppelins were not easy to hit. But if you did hit one they did tend to burn. They were at their best as long-range reconnaissance machines.

For their part, the British attempted to deploy lead Zeppelins in Operation We Are Your Overlord. but that did not work out very well.

Hydrogen needs oxygen to burn. The original orders were to shoot along the craft, which made many holes but didn't start a fire.
It was only when a pilot forgot those orders and kept shooting in one place that the hydrogen mixed with air enough to start burning.

All-ah, ah!
All-ah, ah! We come from the land of the Holy Quran
From the desert sun, where the Jihadis all plan
The jihad for our god
We’ll drive your planes to your lands
We’re the horde; you’ll cry and cry
Oh, Allah, we are coming!
On we sweep with exploding bomb
Our only goal will be the dar-el-harb All-ah, ah!
All-ah, ah! We come from the land of the Holy Quran
From the desert sun, where the Jihadis all plan
How soft you infidels seem
We’ll show you lots of gore
Of how we bring the tides of war
We are your overlords
On we sweep with exploding bomb
Our only goal will be the dar-el-harb
So now you’d better stop and wail at all your ruins
For peace of Allah will win the day; infidels all are losing Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

I loved playing those games as a kid. The next door neighbors had 9 children in their family, there were always enough players for any game you wanted to play. Remember Red Light/Green Light and Simon Says?

Little OR moment from yesterday: I said it was time to put away his toys and come brush his teeth. He said, OK, just a second. I said OK... One second is up. He replied, DADDY, I meant it as a METAPHOR.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 16: He's kind of terrifying, to be honest. My granddaughter is still figuring out this whole language thing. She has a new little friend named Beatrice who apparently is recently potty-trained. Beatrice says "I need to go to the toilet" so often, that M. thinks Toilet is her name.

Speaking of the clever things kids say, when mine was about 5 yrs old I made something for supper that didn't turn out very well. Have I mentioned I'm not a very good cook? If not, I'm a terrible cook! He managed to eat it, but then politely said "this is very good Mommy, but you don't ever have to make it again". Good thing I've got a great sense of humor.
