Bought two of the kids headphones for Christmas.  Silly -- they think the gift was for them.

Got this article about California's new "data privacy law" in one of my morning feeds.

It sounds to me like California is intent on killing the goose that lays whatever golden eggs the Golden State has left; if anyone can forbid an online company from "collecting" and/or "using" their personal data, aren't they effectively destroying the entire model on which Internet business rests?

Facebook unfriends California,

The law doesn't let companies drop customers that ask to delete data, but does let them supplyly a stripped-down version. The solution is to make the stripped-down version not very useful. For example, Facebook could give only generic news feeds and ads.and make it hard for friends to find you - or require you to allow them to store data needed to find people you are looking for.

As for ads, I have seen cases where if you don't have a google account, it puts up ads that make you want to not see them again. Not quite eye bleach level, but close. And it gives you the offer to not see ads like those - if you use a google account. That appears to be perfectly legal under the CA law.

And as I announced last night, I finally got reset password working. For the time being, it will require emailing me and I will send a reset token.

I don't have a way of testing sending email automatically, as I don't have a full server setup at home (WIn 201x server, email server, IIS), so I would have to do testing of automatically generating the reset email on the live system, and that can wait until we have a lot of people.

A few more steps, and by the end of the year, probably sooner, we'll have a real URL and some other fixes.

when I see laws like this, I wonder how much it is just a shake down process where the political class says, “look at the new law we passed. How much is an exemption worth to you? My campaign person over their will accept a check, or you could employ some of my otherwise unemployable relatives.”

Great article.  Oddly, though, it does not mention the band and singer that introduced "Winter Wonderland."

Here's the first recording of that song, by Richard Himber's Ritz-Carlton Hotel Orchestra, with Joey Nash on vocal.

If you'd prefer something a little less syrupy by the same orchestra, here are two:

You're welcome.

Part of the problem getting reset password to work was that I only have limited times to work on it, and I lose some context, like how I changed the way I was doing something but left the old function there. I'd change that one instead of the one really used now.

Jolly Old Ron Karenga
---a Kwanzaa carol, to the tune of "Jolly Old St. Nicholas"

Jolly old Ron Karenga---
Racist to the core,
Torturer and murder,
Academic whore---
Had a plan how he could make
His ideas hold sway,
And invented the brand-new
Kwanzaa holiday.

Every night a candle's lit,
And in Swahili,
Those observing celebrate
Marxist hegemony;
To revile the ideals of
The land where they live;
To recall past grievances,
And to not forgive.

One can only hope blacks are
Mostly too abashed
To heed Ron Karenga and
His concocted trash,
And rather than follow him
Into endless night
They'll reject Ron Karenga
And his Kwanzaa rites.

You need to gather all these together -- I suspect there is enough for a book.  The Great (Anti-) American Songbook.

Been a very quiet Christmas day. Wife was sick last night and hasn't improved at all today. She's managed to move from the bed to the couch. We did have other plans today, but she needs her rest. Retail is hard on the bodies these days.

Duck roasting away -- just made pate with the liver.  That alone pays for the duck.

We've been having a Merry Crabsmas - watching Deadliest Catch.

Eating the crabs is unkosher, but it is OK to watch them being caught.
