Morning all -- so Buttplug pulled out.  I wonder what deal Biden made with him.

What did I read this weekend? He's gunning to be someone's running mate. Is that what you're suggesting? He's offering his services to Biden?

What's his point value in the Intersectionality Olympics? Does a gay white male offset an elderly white male, or does Biden need to appoint the first African-American female Senator to balance the ticket?

Read part of Chrenkoff this morning, complaining that people hoarding toilet paper is the most ridiculous thing and makes absolutely no sense.

And the CDC says...

CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 32 million flu illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations and 18,000 deaths from flu.

That is this season.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm

But by God Corona is going to kill us all... if the guns don't get us first.

Yeah, but.

Flu is a known enemy, there's a vaccine for it (even if only partially effective), there are fairly effective antivirals for treating it, the mortality rate is a known quantity and very low.

Coronavirus is a new thing with a lot of unknowns still.  The two aren't really comparable.  No, there's not cause for panic (is there ever?), but there's cause for concern and preparedness. Have a plan for staying home for at least 2 weeks, better still 3, with everything you need right there.  Apparently even in Wuhan you can still get food delivered, but prepare as if that will not be an option (for whatever reason).

You are correct, the Corona recently jumped to humans so the transmission, infection, mortality rates as well as treatments and vaccines are unknown at this point.

However we've been here before MERS, SARS, and couple others in the last 20 years.

The key I'm looking at is China, with its density, hygiene and health care has fewer cases of corona than US the regular flu this year.

The other thing we don't know yet is if the virus will wane as temperatures go up in the northern hemisphere.

I am skeptical of the numbers coming out of China.

Syrah 3/2/2020 8:19:46 AM

The metro area of Wuhan is about 19 million people.

San Francisco, city and county, is about 1 million.

The population size of Wuhan will make the numbers of infected and dead look very large to Americans.

If only the very obviously ill are compared to the dead, the mortality rate will look very high in Wuhan.

What would the mortality rate look like if there was an accurate number of the total infected, including those that show mild or nearly no symptoms?

Also, the Chinese government is notable for lying. In a culture where people lie to save face and lie to keep from being put up against a wall and shot, it is highly likely that even China doesn’t really know what the real numbers are on this thing.

The images that were coming out of Wuhan of people and whole buildings being hosed down with disinfectant were frightening.

China’s culture of secrecy helps create an atmosphere of panic around this thing because we know that China can’t be trusted to tell the truth and we see them doing things that suggest that they are scared out of their wits by this thing. Keeping in mind that they may not know what the real numbers are in this thing themselves except that they see piles of bodies and factory sized field hospitals stuffed to the rafters with sick people.

Refer back to the population size of just the metro area of Wuhan being at 19 million.

I don’t know what to think of this thing. I am concerned that it could be similar to the Spanish Flu, either a bit more or a bit less.

The public panic may be more of a threat than the disease.

Cautious proaction is good.  Panic is not.

Iran may find itself thrust forcibly into being a nearly first world civilization because the only ones left alive will be the ones living first world lives and practicing modern western hygiene.

That is a hell of a way to advance.

So from what I'm hearing, this past weekend the Big Box stores in around DC were practically emptied of bottled water, toilet paper, paper towels, dishwasher pods, pasta, and I'm not sure what else.

Meanwhile, the run-of-the-mill supermarkets and pharmacy chains seem to have normal supplies of pretty much everything.

An Iranian rock group, the Quran-Teens, is knockin’ ‘em dead with their new hit song, “My Corona”:

My Corona
My Corona
Oh, you nasty little virus, little virus
Are you gonna be around some time, Corona?
They say you’re killing everyone, every one
Incubating in a very short time, Corona
Traveling around the world, need a facial mask
Is it gonna give protection sufficient for the task?
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, woe-ah!
M-m-m-my Corona
My Corona…

When the world population was smaller and population centers far enough apart to make travel back and forth time consuming and difficult, plagues could rage and and burnout and be contained in relatively small geographic areas.

When modern day cities in parts of the world measure their populations in the many millions and travel by car, train or plan is easy and only a mater of hours, the whole world is effectively one population.

With a disease like COVID19 that has an incubation period that spans between two to four weeks, quarantine may be very difficult if not impossible.

we don’t have trustworthy mortality numbers yet.

it is a real shame that something like this has to escape China before we can get a real understanding of how bad, or not, it really is.

And in related news:  The “chocolate chunk oatmeal cookie“ included as a dessert with the XMRE I tried for lunch yesterday is really surprisingly good. No wonder our military is fighting an obesity problem.

As the WSJ noted this morning, Iran has reaped no benefits from the advances made since 1979.  They compared the conditions with the end of the Brezhnev era in the Soviet Union.  Everything is busted, out of date, tired.  And the regime does nothing to help but just lies so much that no one believes anything they say anymore.  Voter turn out in Tehran in the last election was less than 25%.

Max Boot wrote an op-ed in the WaPo saying that Bernie would make and awful president.  Now ol' Max is getting seriously dragged by the Bernie Bros.  His efforts to make himself lovable to the left have failed appariently.
