I am starting to see more doctors coming out and providing written and video commentary that demonstrates that the media and Democrats have totally tried to gin up fear about the virus. In the beginning I agreed with the case that a shelter in place order was reasonable because the virus could have been more deadly than it has turned out to be, and I've changed my mind. Time to open up. I am very glad to see more doctors come out publicly and explain that we don't need to stay the course anymore.

Six Foot Space

—apologies to Tennessee Ernie Ford and “Sixteen Tons”

You keep six-foot space, what do yet?

A semi-assurance you’ve got no virus yet

St. Peter, don’t you call me, ‘cause I can’t go

I’ve got toilet paper on reserve at the store

I woke up one morning and the town was locked down

I walked out my front door and ambled around

I had to keep six feet away from everyone

So how’s a young fellow ‘sposed to have any fun?

You keep six-foot space, what do yet?

A semi-assurance you’ve got no virus yet

St. Peter, don’t you call me, ‘cause I can’t go

I’ve got toilet paper on reserve at the store

At least, in many places. The other part of this madness is that every place is being treated like it’s New York City. As some have asked, rhetorically: if the majority of COVID-19 cases in the United States were located in Wyoming, would New York City shut down?

Listening to Germanicus, the youngest Severan, doing his online class.  Of the hour of instruction, he was paying attention to about ten minutes because he understood the concepts immediately.  Within 20 minutes when the teacher asked for answers he added "anyone except Germanicus." I remember how boring that was from my school days.

You meet folks on the street and you both do a dance

That’s what they call “observing social distance”

When you get home don’t dare to touch your hands to your eyes

Until you’re sure you’ve been thoroughly sanitized

You keep six-foot space, what do yet?

A semi-assurance you’ve got no virus yet

St. Peter, don’t you call me, ‘cause I can’t go

I’ve got toilet paper on reserve at the store

You can’t walk around unless you have a mask

You can’t work unless you have an essential task

You just have to hunker down and shelter in place

And try to recall what it’s like seeing a face

You keep six-foot space, what do yet?

A semi-assurance you’ve got no virus yet

St. Peter, don’t you call me, ‘cause I can’t go

I’ve got toilet paper on reserve at the store

You can’t go to a restaurant to eat some food

Can’t go to the park or to the beach if you're in the mood

Try to go to a church, they’ll hit you with a fine

So just stay at home and order online

You keep six-foot space, what do yet?

A semi-assurance you’ve got no virus yet

St. Peter, don’t you call me, ‘cause I can’t go

I’ve got toilet paper on reserve at the store

Also note that while changes in day-to-day infection and deaths were being presented at the beginning, those charts and graphs are going away. It's not expedient to have it anymore for the beltway folks.

Now, of course, I notice a typo; last word of first chorus line should be "get," not "yet."

Huh? What double eyebrows?

Reply to vxbush in 15:

It looks like double eyebrows. What you're actually seeing is a prominent brow bone that exposes a lot of eyelid and penciled-in eyebrows that are much too high. One more facelift and her eyebrows and hairline will be one.

I think also she has a single dark line for eyeliner, that makes it look like another eyebrow.

Yes, it looks like she's used a darker brown in the crease. She doesn't usually look that bad. I think she must normally use a makeup artist and she's just not good at doing it herself.

I've been endlessly amused by my local TV newsfolk. One woman has clearly not been able to use relaxer and the result is a bit poodle-like.

Arrgghhhh

Help son with online science cours.

Not only is the online material frequently WRONG.

When you take the online quiz and answer according to the material... the correct answer is different from what they say in the text.

Not only that their english make ME go grammar nazi.....

I write this stuff (albeit for grownups) for a living. One of the most basic aspects of curriculum design is alignment among the learning objectives, the content, and the assessment. This sort of thing is maddening but not surprising when I look at some of my classmates who are K-12 teachers hoping to transition from the classroom to curriculum development. They are consistently weak writers, and weak writing is often the result of a failure to grasp the material. Let me tell you, peer review and group projects can be downright painful.

I think a lot of parents who were not engaged in their children's education are now discovering just how crappy it is. This may create a lot of new homeschoolers, or at least parents who go to Board of Education meetings and get involved in things like selecting curriculum. And I'm not even talking about things like Seattle's Math is Racist stuff.

A couple of underlying issues besides the union control and liberal infestation I've determined is this.

To be a "teacher" requires a degree in "education. They do not have to be a subject matter expert or even have a degree in field they teach.

The result is that teachers are prisoners of the ciricula they are provided... they don't know enough to know garbage when they see it.

The other is they are captives of process. Outcome is irrelevant. Did you have the required meetings? Did all the check boxes get checked? The process was followed...

The racist Portland Baseline Essays have been a plague on education for at least thirty years, if not more.  I believe they can be found online.

It is some years since I've looked at them---I found out about them when my father was fighting them when he was on the local school boards, and he's been gone for 20 years---but what I read back then was appalling.  There was a lot of Afrocentrist garbage, including statements that the ancient Egyptians had mastered heavier-than-air flight, electroplating, and something called "remote viewing," which apparently was something akin to the palantir stones in Lord of the Rings.

These things were produced by the Portland school system some time in the 80s, I think, and were quietly adopted by many school systems across the land.

Education majors reportedly have the lowest SAT scores of any major. I could count on one hand the number of teachers I've known, personally or professionally, that I would consider really smart, and still have fingers left over.

My daughter took physics in high school because I could help her.

The book absolutely stunk. It was not clear. I knew the answers and had trouble figuring out what the book was saying.

Apparently, they didn't make a habit hobbit of using their palantirs.

Yes, the stuff was obvious BS---though it was written in that soft, downy language in which "educational" materials are often wrapped.  Yet the Portland Baseline essays were widely adopted in school districts across America as "multicultural" and "inclusive" materials---and are, I don't doubt, still used as such.

My dad was one of six members of the class of 1944 at his tiny Catholic high school. He and one other boy were the only males who hadn't dropped out to enlist. He couldn't because he only turned 17 in April. In the fall he entered an officer training program at the University of Pennsylvania, but he failed chemistry and ended up as an enlisted soldier. He went to Italy in 1945 but it was basically over, so he guarded POWs in a convent, where the nuns continued to feed and care for the prisoners. Not super heroic, but I'm proud of his service.
