This morning brought the news that the government is closing the Chinese consulate in Houston, apparently in connection with intellectual-property thefts/spying. It seems time to recommend the 1933 Paramount "cavalcade comedy" International House: This hilarious film centers around Professor Wong, who has invented a "radioscope," i.e., a television device, and all sorts of people converge on the International House hotel in Wuhu, China, to bid for the rights. The hotel is run by Franklin Pangborn; the house physician and nurse are Burns & Allen. Russian interests are represented by Bela Lugosi; British interests by Lumsden Hare. The American Electric Company is represented by Stuart Erwin, who wants to marry his girlfriend but keeps breaking out in childhood diseases just short of the altar. When he breaks out in a rash, the entire hotel is quarantined. The "radioscope" is an excuse to show a cavalcade of acts; Rudy Vallee, Baby Rose Marie, Stoopnagle & Budd, and Cab Calloway doing "The Reefer Man." WC Fields, flying around the world in an autogiro, lands on the roof-garden floor show in the middle of Sterling Holloway's number, "She Was a China Teacup, But He Was Just a Mug." Look at the prescience of this film; China, Wuhu, quarantine, intellectual property.

Minnesota Attorney General Ellison: Cops Shouldn’t Respond To Rape Calls “If you’re a woman who’s been a victim of a sexual assault and the assailant has ran away, wouldn’t you rather talk to somebody who is trained in helping you deal with what you’re dealing with as opposed to somebody whose main training is that they know how to use a firearm, right?” he asked.

Reply to lucius septimius in 5: Tough call. I think black men have the edge here because white women's tears are exhausting or something.
