Empty Pub.  A place for trivia.

8/8 is significant for me.  32 years ago on this date I returned home to The Land of Lincoln from S. California.  The hottest and most humid recorded time in Chicago's history.  47 days of 90° or higher. The grasses all around were brown, nary a weed could grow due to the drought of many midwest states that year.

Even though crops failed and therefore farmers suffered, even though it was hot, humid and miserable weather-wise, even though Reagan was leaving office, even though I was returning home, my life's future, yet unknown, was embarking.

32 years ago, I was working for the second largest computer company in the world, and felt I had it somewhat made.

That company is long gone now.

Funny thing is, the job I had before that was a contractor at the same place I am a contractor now.

The company in '88 begins with D?

Wait, did I say “kindergarten“?

I meant, law school.

Cyberdyne?

It was a very promising company, indeed. And then in 1991, they suffered that crazy terrorist attack on their headquarters, by that woman and the teenage kid and that huge guy in the leather jacket, along with one of their own top scientists. They never recovered.

Yes. I had started working there in 84, in the terminals group. Developed their X-Windows terminal.

Today, Weekend Edition ran something about Nagasaki Day.  Worth reading/listening to, as it is mostly nothing more than a hit job on nuclear weapons and, of course, Donald Trump.

No, the company I worked for was started much earlier, and had their headquarters in an old mill (appropriate, since Charles Babbage called part of the CPU in his mechanical computer the Mill.

They probably have no problem with Iran getting nuclear weapons, either.

Well, thank goodness. Believe it or not, at that time I had actually switched my career to Cyberdyne in the hopes of achieving greater stability, after that terrible winter internship I’d done a few years previously at Nakatomi Corporation’s US headquarters in Los Angeles.  The company’s holiday party started out well enough, but man, did it ever go downhill fast.

Be sure to remind every “progressive“ you know: as things stand now, President Trump is the first president since Jimmy Carter who has not gotten us into a new “war” during his presidency.

Then stand back as their heads explode, while they try to wrap their minds around that fact.

For holiday parties, the company had a strict no alcohol on the premises policy, but a VP made a rum cake where you could get drunk from the fumes.

Carter tried, but the Iranians just laughed at him.

Meanwhile a friend of mine is convinced that Trump is going to "declare war" in October to secure his control over the country or something.  I would have explained that only Congress has the authority to "declare" war, but I didn't think it worth the effort.

My prediction for this election is that Trump wins in a landslide, with an unprecedented (since the civil rights movement of the '60's) percentage of the black vote (they don't want their neighborhoods run by gangs).

Then the Dems refuse to accept the results, claiming they don't match the polls, so the elections must have been hacked, and they get the Deep State out. Interesting times to come.

You included the sarc tag. Trump didn't, and even Obama didn't.

The race war was started in the '60s or 70's, but it has been a cold war until now.

WSJ reported on the madness of New York's mail in ballots on the primaries.  Over 28% of ballots were rejected for one reason or another.  Overwhelming incompetence.

The Dems haven't accepted a Republican President since 2000.  And let's not forget that if it wasn't for Ross Perot, that dickwad, Clinton would never have been elected.

You can also remind your “progressive” acquaintances who are of a more environmentalist bent, that Trump has done more than any other president to reduce humanity’s carbon footprint; due to the billions of people he has killed through his tax cuts, repeal of net neutrality, mean tweets, etc.

And with that, I wish you all a good night.

If a novel were to be written, perhaps the first sentence of it might start thusly.

It would be a pretty boring novel. I didn't meet any mysterious strangers, or embark on a secret affair, or get involved in any radical political movements.

Ha, you are right.  Misses the much sought after fiction in today's world, real life doesn't draw readers.

Life's experiences.  Lessons learned. Boring. Novels are never written and sold based on that!

The Road Less Traveled, for example.  Or The Peter Principle.
