Alice, the Country Estate is what I call my boyfriend's house, about 40 miles west of Atlanta. My house is known as the City Pied à Terre.

People may have heard that "Blazing Saddles" is the latest film to come under Woke Scrutiny; apparently now it, like "Gone With the Wind," will still be available (for the moment, anyway), but with an attached harangue by a "woke" scholarette who wants to make sure that it is viewed in the Proper Perspective. Those who are familiar with the film will recollect that there is a scene towards the end where a male chorus is rehearsing a number called "The French Mistake," which has a great deal of gay/pansy humor in it. What few people realize is that the entire number is a riff on a 1932 number by Gene Malin, a famous performer during the "pansy craze" of the period; "I'd Rather Be Spanish." This highly-arch "camp" number, with the varied refrains "I'd rather be Spanish than mannish" and "I'm Spanish, but why bring that up?" ends with a "Voila!" that sounds exactly like the "Voila!" in the equally-gay "French Mistake" number---and, of course, the joke is that the "Voila!" on the Malin record is indeed a "French mistake" since he's talking about being Spanish, not French. An utterly-useless piece of cultural-crossover trivia, but it is little-known enough that I thought it might interest some.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 9: Firesign Theatre's I Think We're All Bozos on this Bus is the first piece of hacker comedy. The Future is run by a PDP-10 (systat, uptime.....) and Clem hacks it. I'll give more details on request.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 10: I knew Blazing Saddles was doomed too. Richard Pryor is having fits in his grave.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 12: I'm not a huge fan of Mel Brooks---like some of his stuff, dislike other stuff---but I admire his using the signoff from this lesser-known record as the springboard for that number.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 13: His movies were erratic. Depends on who wrote them. Pryor was one of the writers of Blazing Saddles, and it shows. However, that bit with the French Mistake was clearly Brooks, not Pryor. Same with the monster in Young Frankesnstein singing Putting on the Ritz. Which reminds me, that's where we take our dogs for grooming. They are way overdue, but we have an appointment in the week after next.
