...the end of law is not to abolish or restrain, but to preserve and enlarge freedom: for in all the states of created beings capable of laws, where there is no law, there is no freedom: for liberty is, to be free from restraint and violence from others; which cannot be, where there is no law: but freedom is not, as we are told, a liberty for every man to do what he lists: (for who could be free, when every other man's humour might domineer over him?) but a liberty to dispose, and order as he lists, his person, actions, possessions, and his whole property, within the allowance of those laws under which he is, and therein not to be subject to the arbitrary will of another, but freely follow his own.

I guess they are now the Ebonics department.

Then, there's the dialect the Black Hebrews use - Hebonics

Had a “conversation” via text with a longtime friend who lives in Lancaster, PA, about the shooting and riots.  Up until now, I’d have said he’s moderate-liberal.

The conversation was just... bizarre.

These people are both brainwashed, and shockingly ignorant.  And it really bothers me to have to say that, in this case.

Try pasting as plain text. That put a Sign Up button (for goodreads)

I will see if I can edit it in the database.

Too hard to find over a slow connection. (Would need a very fast connection - not a residential one)

Just, everyone, be careful pasting stuff.

The problem with copying and pasting something other than text (and it can be hard to tell what you get) is that it can include scripts that are not good.

This one only put a Sign Up button on the screen. Annoying, but not harmful. Other scripts could try to install malware, and I'd have to find and delete the post.

These people are both brainwashed, and shockingly ignorant.  And it really bothers me to have to say that, in this case.

If y'all don't mind, I'd like to elaborate, and seek your reactions; because this "conversation" left me quite... I don't know, angry?  Incredulous?

This is a close friend I've known since 1996.  He's from Peru, he and I worked together while I was living there at the time; he's been living in the US with his American wife since about 1999 or 2000.  The live in Lancaster, PA.

So I sent him a text, asking if they were OK, since I'd heard "there were some problems in Lancaster last night".  He replied they were fine, that was in a different part of town.  I expressed relief, then said "the times we are living in are quite incredible.

Him: "Regrettable... Lancaster is very tranquil, but the Latino and African-American communities live in a state of segregation, where the police yesterday killed a person who had schizophrenia.

Me:  Well... yes, he maybe had schizophrenia but was also attacking a cop with a knife.  I'm not sure what the people who are throwing brick through windows wanted the cop to do in that situation.

Him: We may not agree, but this is an evident case of police brutality [emphasis mine]/.  The police officers instead of de-escalating the situation, they supposedly trained to do so, shot a mentally ill African-Latino person four times!  if he would have been a Caucasian white dude the police officer would have dealt with the situation differently.'"

[at time point I am not quite believing what I am reading]

Me: "This is an evident case of police brutality"?!  You have got to be kidding me.  Have you actually seen the body cam video?

Him: "Have you seen how far away was the killed person from the police officer?  The police officer was also equipped with a taser and pepper spray. Also had training in de-escalating situations like this one.  Instead, chose to shoot FOUR times."

Me:  I will ask again, have you seen the body cam video?

Him: "Of course!

Me: The guy was about two seconds away from being on top of the police office with a knife in his hand.  At that point, your gun is basically useless, your Taser is useless.  As far as shooting "four times!", do yourself a favor and take a self-defense class.  You shoot to stop the immediate threat.  You don't fire one shot, pause, and see what happens.  Any rational cop in the world would have done the same as that cop. That's what I would to, too, under the same circumstances, as would anyone else trained in the use of a firearm. This is ridiculous.

And you seem to have this strange idea that white people can get away with doing this.  If I charge at a cop waving a butcher knife, I'm going to be shot multiple times.  I will not be able to just pull out my "white privilege"card and walk away.  Be serious.

Him: Let's agree to disagree, thanks for checking in.

I'll say again, had you asked me a few hours ago, I'd have said this guy is moderately-left, but sensible  I know his wife is uber-"woke", but didn't think that was his position.

But this... wow.  We literally live in different realities.  I don't know how we can find common ground with people who are so functionally delusional.  This is not good.

Try to only paste text. In windows, right click gives the option of "Paste as plain text" - that is safe

I wonder why I see funny Sign Up buttons and other things on the site

So, your friend knew this guy was African-Latino and mentally ill the split second the cops in the situation knew this?  Smart, intuitive, and just oh, so ahead of everyone.

Only once have I been in a situation where I might have had to shoot someone.  I didn't have to, and I'm glad, but in those moments you don't have time to wallow in probabilities.

Just out of curiosity, were you actually armed at the time? And do you care to elaborate? In event; you can watch the body cam footage from Lancaster, this was as clean a shoot as a shoot can be. The cop is absolutely justified. This is not a cop kneeling on the neck of a man who is prone and handcuffed for nine minutes, this is a cop who is likely about to die in about two more seconds if he does not stop the threat.

That somebody I used to respect could look at that video and come away with a conclusion, “oh, the cop should’ve de-escalated” But he didn’t, because the other guy was Afro Latino!“, I just don’t know what to say. I’m both outraged and depressed.

Wouldn't help except for those who can edit the HTML code (the editor does have a code view button, but few know what to do with what is in it)

It doesn’t matter if the guy was a Lutheran Eskimo who had won a Nobel peace prize, the video plainly shows he was charging a cop and brandishing a knife, starting from just a couple yards away. That this can be used as a pretext for rioting, and that my friend can take the position that he did, is absolutely outrageous.
