For a Russian leader, Putin is not a Jew-hater. And he does not use the Russian Jew-hatred to advance his power. Rumor is, when he was a child, a Jewish couple would take him in after school while his parents were working, and give him snacks. If that is true (and I think it is), the kindness paid off for a vast number of Jews.

There is a bar in the middle of Fox Lake that you can only get to by boat. They have never had a phone. The recently put one in that you can call out on but not receive any calls.

Howdy. I'm just back for dinner with my lady friend A., who is just... wow, all-around one of the loveliest women I've ever known, and is currently visiting the area from LA. Alas, it seems unlikely that she'll be able to relocate back to the DC area anytime soon, due to her ex's custody claims over their daughter. Nor could I contemplate moving to LA, for parallel reasons. It's not impossible that her situation might change, but it's not likely any time soon. Dang. This feels like some silly romantic novel/movie plot, but, there it is.
