Just chewed out a vendor. Their drawings are one way. In a note on the description page is a reference to an external document, a MIL-SPEC, just a note... 4 - MIL-SPEC... No reason for the note. On page 32 of the MIL-SPEC is a footnote, if the part has this sub-class then the part is mirrored from the drawing. I told them having notes to external documents for fundamental features was not good practice.

Reply to JCM in 1: They deserve to be paid in a footnote, with bills mirror-image from real ones.

Reply to JCM in 1: Good catch JCM! Great attention to detail. My guess is you may have been burnt a time or two in the past on similar obtuse drawings and specs, I know I have. It sure teaches you to really study everything on the drawing.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 2: Electronics vendors treat ANSI and JEDEC drawing standards as a "maybe" we'll do it. The worst are the ones that at first glance have a Standard format, but the details they do their own damn thing.

Reply to turn in 3: I've dealt with drawings with two origins. Co-worker built the thing and it didn't work. I spent a least a day looking at the thing and the drawings. It was very subtle the mechanical connections used one origin and electrical used a different origin. No call out for it, just a mess of a drawing.

Reply to JCM in 4: This is where a good contract lawyer could come in. "Meet the spec, or you pay all the time we wasted trying to figure out what you gave us" I know that this is complicated and there will be bugs - but a good attorney could write a contract that allows for mistakes, but not "This pin does not do what you said it does" Of course, you might not find a vendor that accepts the contract.

Reply to turn in 6: These guys are mess, not a single document gives you all the info you need to make the eCAD part. It takes 3 different docs to get all the information. Only ONE is included on the web page for the part. I had to get creative in my searching and finally found the 2nd document, which referenced the 3rd which I couldn't find and had to request from the vendor. Not a single document follows any drawing standard. Only because I've dealt with MIL-SPEC did i pull that document. Unfortunately I can't deny an engineer a part because the vendors docs are garbage.

Speaking of work. If you know teens thinking about a what career path to follow have them check out Printed Circuit Board Designer, or layout. It doesn't require a degree, many tech schools and community colleges offer programs. Most designers started out as techs and just fell into, they got asked at some point do you want to work on a board? The industry is screaming for layout people. We can't get enough. We just had to write a big contract with a design house to do a lot of the work because we can't find enough people. I've been out of the job market for over a year and still get 4 or so recruiting inquiries a week.
