Served dinner.... Called out to the kids "Dinner is Served"

Sudden memory riding the Union Pacific Portland Rose. The black steward dress in white with this three or four note chime, striking the notes and calling out "First seating for dinner, First seating for dinner!"

Even the Acela Express means you go to the diner car and get a box lunch in a cardboard box - assuming they actually have anything worth getting. One trip, their refrigerator failed and the attendant understandably would not sell bad food.

(BTW, on some version of Visual C++, in the debug version of code, uninitialized memory would be filled with a hexadecimal value:

BAADF00D)

Taking tomorrow off. Have to use vacation time or lose it.

Wife's car has a recall for possibly incorrectly treated driveshafts. Taking it and trying to get mine inspected, too.

Tuesday, dog grooming,

Next Friday, a 4 day weekend.

This was early '60's so it was white linen and china service.

When we went to Iran in '66 on Pan Am that was white linen and china dinner service also.

PanAm name is owned by Guilford Railroad, known for their use of graffiti to hold rusted train cars together.

They also, irrc, own Maine Central railroads, where the trains are in even worse shape

That locomotive was state of the art in the 1980's - the first one with microprocessor control

40 years later, not so state of the art

Need to write a parody, with King Arthur singing

I've been searching on the grail road

My grandmother took me around the country on trains in 1957 (dating myself there).  The B & O was the worst.  We took it from in or near Brooklyn, NY to Ohio. The train trip was from Portland, Oregon to Seattle Washington, Seattle to Chicago, Chicago to New York, New York to Ohio, Ohio to Washignton DC, DC to Tennessee, Tennessee to New Orleans, then to Texas and Southern California.  I went hom to Nevada on a bus.  What a great trip.  We had to sit in our seats the whole way so no fancy meals or sleeping cars for us.  It was a great trip that I'll never forget.

The changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery.  I remember the civil war tombstons as well.  The guide said the reason the pointed ones were for southern vets was because they didn't want any damn yankees sitting on them. LOL

Nice.  I think my parents had all of the Glenn Miller recordings.
