I interviewed Mauldin when I was in 8th grade; he autographed---with a drawing---the entire stack of his works I staggered in with, and did me a drawing of his GI character "Joe," on the spot, on a Chicago Sun-Times scratch-pad.  I have had it framed for years, and one of the few genuine regrets in my life is that I did not call/write him before he died to tell him how kind he was about my drawings.
