So tomorrow morning there will be an annular solar eclipse. Eclipses have been traditionally been associated with disasters. Tomorrow is my birthday.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 1: Maybe the only disaster is that gift from a cousin (her father worked for The Phone Company, got all his relatives jobs there, including her, but they moved her out to Phoenix), well a gift basket of Ghiradelli chocolate from Wine Country Gift Baskets, arrived Monday in a heat wave, and UPS was delayed, too. Melted, but all the pieces were in sealed bags, so nothing leaked, and it still tastes good after overnight in the refrigerator.

In college, we helped do some LoTR videos for a friend of ours, and my roommate's Gollum was better than any in the movies. (Worcester State had a great TV studio, and this was the day of reel-to-reel videotape.)

Regarding Donald Moss, the author of the paper calling whiteness a disease that OR posted about, is in fact white, as I expected. I'll take him seriously when he commits suicide to set an example for all the other liberal white parasites.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 8: My wife turned on the news... story was the CA drought. No mention the rainfall etc... is on par with 10, 100, and 1000 year average cycles. No mention of all the water retention projects in the '70s that were cancelled by Moonbeam. No mention of the court mandate increase water release for environmental reasons. Nope... electric cars are the answer.

If you are China and largely have a monopoly on the rare earths needed for the magnets --- they've got you covid (Maybe this is part of the reason we have not been cracking down on China for causing it - too much crap we get from them) BTW, Massachusetts made a deal with China to set up a plant in Springfield to build subway cars. First cars came out a couple of years ago. NONE are in service due to too many faults. Doors opening at random times, excessive wear on bearings that support the car body on the trucks, and probably more. LA is buying subway cars from the same plant.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 10: Ya wanna talk subway cars? I'll tell you 'bout subway cars. For 25-30 years New York's MTA (the "MT" stands for their skulls) has been buying subway cars that have doors directly across from each other, when for close to 100 years the MTA bought cars with staggered doors, that automatically broke up and distributed the ridership evenly throughout the car. Too simple, too obvious, for the current Empty-A skulls to comprehend.

Some hot summer, a car came into the station, radiating heat. I talked to the car operator. She said "The heat is on and I can't turn it off". I waited for another train. The MTA used to be a lot better, but is going down the tubes now.

So this will be the first night since Saturday I'll not have to stay up until at least 10:30 working.
And that, of course means wild partying two hours at the gym early bedtime.

I think the MTA subway car doors were all radically redesigned after the scandal in which Popeye Doyle lost "Frog One'.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 18: A few years ago, there was a major gas line explosion in Springfield, MA. (The person digging was careful, but the line was marked incorrectly; and the smell of gas let everyone get warned and get to safety; no injuries among civilians) My wife had some cases out there, looked at the pictures, and said "How can they tell the difference?" It was outside a "Gentlemen's club", which is, as we know, a place real gentlemen don't go, but all the dancers got out because of the warning.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 19: Cute, but not true. The MTA cars had staggered door until at least the mid-80s---at which time they went for doors that were not staggered. Now, you have to understand that if you make a subway car with doors on both sides, it takes almost nothing to stagger the doors---you use the same panel for each side, so all it takes is a little drafting to ensure that the doors will be staggered and the riders thereby evenly distributed throughout the cars---but this simple calculation was beyond the capability of New York's Empty-A.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 19: Saw "The French Connection" in college, with an introduction by the director, who was "in residence" in various Worcester institutions, in which he stated he never could get through the book.
And the scene where they find the drugs (link)////

There’s an unusual amount of interesting trivia and backstory about that movie.
I think my favorite story (that’s not about the car chase ) is about how William Friedkin hired Fernando Rey to play “Frog One” because he mixed him up with Francisco Rabal from “Belle du Jour”. Rey’s French was not good, so they wound up dubbing his French dialogue.
