Buzz, I didn't' notice the part where you said you left the teaching position until later. At least you don't need it. Not worth the trouble.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 1: I find it interesting that they use the word "fressen" in the first stanza. I don't know the implication in Yiddish, but in modern German it's used solely to refer to the way animals eat. The earlier meaning was more "devour" -- I've seen it used in 15th and early 16th century German to describe someone eating in an uncouth manner.

Reply to lucius septimius in 10: Fressen means overeating in Yiddish. There are places that sell overstuffed sandwiches "Fresser's Dream"

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 11: That's the older German meaning as well -- does sometimes show up in modern German as slang, but almost always is an insult. Drinking too much is "saufen," as in "Sau," that is, a sow.

Sorry to come late to the party, but I thought you'd seen the news of my resignation. It was time to go---and, whether I get some other teaching, or at least lecturing, gig, or branch out into some other things I'd like to do, gam zu l'tovah; this too is for good.
