Reposting from last night, because why not:

So, silly discussion question for Friday [Saturday] night. Extraterrestrials appear in your home, and tell you that they’re going to teleport you to another planet in exactly 2 hours, in order to represent humanity. They tell you nothing else about this mission or the destination planet except that you will be away for five earth days and then returned, also by teleportation.  They say you can bring with you whatever you can carry on your person including in a backpack; if you try to contact anyone else for help you will be teleported immediately just with what you have on you. You cannot bring any pack animals, robots, vehicles, or anything of that nature. Only what you can carry. Again, you have two hours to gather whatever supplies you want to bring, whether from your own home or what you can find that quickly in your area.

Assume you take what they are saying at face value. What would you pack?

Tequila does that. Similar around 19709, but with someone else. Other person seemed pleasantly drunk, but functional. Got up, passed out and had to be carried to bed.

I will leave out racist remark about Mexican liquor.

I often have wondered about trying to explain people to aliens. 

Around 1975, I had a dream an alien spacecraft landed for me to fly to their mother ship. The engines worked on the basis of destabilizing matter with very high frequency EM fields. I still know exactly what the craft looked like, so if it ever lands near me, I'm ready!

OK, so you are implicitly answering what I consider to be the key threshold question to the thought experiment: you are assuming that your hosts, or kidnappers as the case may be, will provide the minimum needed to sustain your life during your trip. That is, you are not bringing food, water, protective clothing, weapons, that sort of thing.

This would probably be a smart choice. I mean, if they want to kill you, you’re dead. Or if they plop you down on the surface of mercury, there’s nothing you can bring with you that’s going to protect you. Still, I would be very tempted to at least bring some water and food, and yes, my Sig P365. Just in case.
