And the recycling thread reminds me of a line from "The Red Green Show" (can't find the line on youtube) "You don't buy beer; you rent it" I believe that was where they were going to brew beer in a water tower by building a fire under it. When asked "What if the tower catches on fire?", Red answered "We'll drink the beer and use our bodies as fire hoses."

On environment scams, plastic bags. Even National Geographic which long ago lost its mind had an article.. The hated plastic bag is the most environmentally friendly.

Reply to JCM in 2: A reusable shopping bag takes far more resources than a disposable one AND NEEDS TO BE WASHED! It would fall apart before it became a smaller use of resources. Virtue signaling. I just wish I could still get paper bags.

Excuse me while I bag a mouse a trap caught, and then get to the rest of the trash. At least the system Dell sent as a replacement for the one that does not work right is largely functional - but I need to do THE TEST the other one failed

Interesting followup comments on the rare-earth recovery article I posted earlier. Thanks. I particularly liked the ranking of ease of recycling (metal, good, glass, less so, paper & plastic, forget it); the point about mining our old landfills, etc. For a while, my father was paid by some scrapmetal bigwig as a consultant. The idea was to try to use low-temperature physics to separate out different metals via a centrifuge; apparently the different atomic weights made this at least theoretically possible. I no longer recall the details---this was happening during a period when Dad and I were on the outs, so I didn't get many details in the first place---but it would have been something like 40 or 50 years ago.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 5: Another thing I remembered, is minerals have to bind to citric acid for uptake into the human body. Using what sounds like metabolic chemistry for mineral recovery is brilliant.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 5: The idea makes sense at a theoretical level, but not at a practical one. Using centrifuges is not very efficient; thus the search for better ways to enrich uranium, There was a similar concept during the Manhattan project, but I don't remember the name, Same with laser enrichment in the 70's or 80's. Never panned out.

The Fauci "experiments" in which puppies with their vocal chords removed had their heads eaten alive by flies remind me of the scene in "1984" where O'Brien is about to strap the cage of ravenous live rats to Winston Smith's head.

Reply to midwestgak in 12: Glad to see this site is still here. Thanks Ambassador Kosh. Babylon 5 The mysterious Vorlons are seldom seen and speak even less, and the Vorlon Ambassador Kosh is no exception. Captain Sheridan eventually establishes a working friendship with Kosh, who even acted as a wise teacher on occasion. The same can't be said about Kosh's relationship with Commander Jeffrey Sinclair.
Though fans don't see a ton of Kosh in season 1, the relationship between him and the commander is shown to be contentious and suspicious despite them not being full-blown enemies. This can be seen in Kosh's first scene of the series proper in "The Gathering," where Sinclair informs Kosh of an emergency meeting. Sinclair enters Kosh's chamber and begins to ask him about the meeting, but the whole time Sinclair is shown to be suspicious of the reserved ambassador.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 9: I have avoided reading the description of those experiments, because I don’t want nightmares. If you happened to see, on what possible justification were they done?
