Kosh: I do hope that buzz one day can write a book and/or teach a course along the lines of your post from the last thread. He'd do a helluva job.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 4: Saw it. I got some of the references; the prof didn't get all of them

By the way---sorry, another followup---at the end of "Invisible Man" the narrator, referring to the trickster character of Brother Jack, the narrator talks about "Balling the Jack," which was a dance of the time, because "he and his comrades (inaccurately quoted, but close enough) are making the old eagle rock dangerously." This is a punning reference to the dance "the Eagle Rock," but also referring to the Communists as being a threat to America.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 7: See, for reference, Bessie Smith's song "Baby Doll," which contains the line, "He can be ugly/He can be black/As long as he can Eagle Rock and Ball the Jack..."

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 10: Always loved that one. It reminds me of the scene at the end of the early Sturges film "Christmas in July," where Raymond Wallburn has been pelted with fish by the neighborhood, and his valet, brushing off his clothes, asks his whether he was at a fish fry.
