All patches have to be test by corp IT. Then released through a corp IT tool that monitors computers.

Last year one slipped through, it turned off remote access on computers. Everyone that used a remote computer was unable to log in. IT had to madly scramble and physically log on every machine used as a remote and reset remote access.

That was a fun day.

Everyplace I work has to do the same. I know a patch is serious if where I work rolls it out in only a few days.

I never update all the computers here at once. Wait for one, then update the next

Not only do we have data backups, but backup computers. Something can be used in not that long should one not work.
