The book I put in Book Reviews forum: Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway Spent time comparing the damage control between USN and IJN. While we had damage control specialists every sailor has had firefighting and damage control training. The IJN had only specialists. Additionally was the American cultural aspect that sailors in crisis don't wait for orders, they will do what they can. One IJN carrier I can't remember which one, the damage control officer was killed and a junior officer order all ventilation open and fans turned on to clear the gas fumes. That spread the fumes through out the carrier and when it blew... IT BLEW!
