Some doomsday-minded person needs to put a rock festival together and call it "Ragnar-Rock."

SpaceX just landed a booster on the barge ... again. 5th flight for this particular booster. I still find it mind blowing you launch a booster, then it turns around flies back and lands on a barge at sea.

One thing they needed to know was how the rocket exhaust plume interacts with the atmosphere. NASA also wanted to know that because heavier Mars missions will require retrorockets; the Martian atmosphere is too thin for heavy landers to use parachutes. NASA had the sensors, but a rocket experiment would have cost too much. SpaceX had the rocket but no sensors. So they did a trade. NASA collected the data for both SpaceX and NASA, at a fraction of the cost of running their own mission, and SpaceX got the data they needed. Win-win.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 4: And that is an example of how NASA SHOULD work, the way its predecessor, NACA did. Not order air/spacecraft, but help companies develop their own. In the 1960's, OK, that was needed, but not by the 90's
