I've been watching an Icelandic police show on Prime.  Observations:

• Years of reading Old Norse sagas didn't prepare me for discussions of police procedure, cell phones, social media, construction equipment, cars, hospitals, etc.
• They talk really fast and swallow almost as many syllables as the French
• I can pick out strong verbs as prepositions pretty easily.
• My thin knowledge of modern Swedish does help some.
• It confirmed that, contrary to my professor in grad school, my accent is on point.

I wish I could figure out how to turn on close captioning - I really want to see the text.

The Old Norse word for "cellphone" is nökia.

I'm reminded of when I saw the movie Stargate in the theater, back when it came out.  In one scene, Ra is having a conversation with Daniel Jackson, allegedly in ancient Egyptian.  Ra says something like: "Your people have advanced much.  [gesturing toward the atomic weapon the SG team had brought along]  You have even harnessed the power of the atom."

I whispered to my date, "what's the ancient Egyptian word for atom?".
