Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 2: Breaking a longstanding practice, we will be going out on "Friday of Color" - but because it is the only time we have to get replacement bathroom sinks. Ours have had enamel chipping off exposing rust underneath, and the faucets are hard to turn off.

On a more serious note, if you have an architectural salvage place like "Build it Green" in New York anywhere in the vicinity, you can probably find nice vintage sinks with heavy enamel at a reasonable price. Hard-to-turn-off faucets are usually merely an indication that the washers in the faucets need replacing.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 5: These are newer faucets, and the sinks are in such bad condition (flaking porcelain) that we figure we might as well replace both. Not an easy job, as the amateurs who installed the bathroom left little space to access the fittings to the water and drains. We have a handyman who is good at doing the work, but needs me as the "engineering department" to figure out what to do

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 5: And there is no salvage place nearby. There is an industrial construction material recycling place, or used to be, but we need to make it easy for us

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 6: Never heard that song before. I wonder if it was originally done by a woman when the Threepenny Opera was first done. "Musical," as you rightly note, was a euphemism for being "that way" (another euphemism); one of the best uses of "musical"---and least-noticed---is when Renault, in "Casablanca," is told that the letters of transit had been concealed in Sam's piano, and he says, "Serves me right for not being musical." But "like that," and "that way," were common euphemisms of the time also.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 9: I made the remark because you pointed out the euphemism of "musical" in the context of Casablanca. And notes I read is that yes, "That's My Way" was to be sung by a woman - Polly Peachum - but was usually left out of the performances. for those who do not know, in The Beggar's Opera, and The Threepenny Opera based on it, Macheath is a murderer and robber, and has a gang, and has married many women, but when he marries Polly Peachum, daughter of Johnathan Jeremiah Peachum, King of the Beggars, he gets the law on his behind. "Mack The Knife" is a decent film adaptation, with fantastic acting from Raul Julia as Mack the Knife, and Richard Harris as Peacham. I will link a few pieces from it in later posts

I'm assuming, from the British accent, and the Daltrey credit, that it is in fact Roger Daltrey.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 13: There's a film version of "The Beggar's Opera" which I saw many years ago, and remember little about, other than that it was pretty good. I don't think it had the Brecht/Weill music, though.

Sigh. Little OR was not exactly on his best behavior at Thanksgiving dinner. Not a meltdown, either, but just not his usual sweet self. It might just be that the travel has him overstimulated or off his feet or whatever. Hopefully tomorrow will be better, we basically have a day of unstructured free time with his grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins (but, crucially, not necessarily all at once).
