I read something the other day about how France's cafes are dwindling---but the once-ubiquitous neighborhood taverns of Chicago are dwindling too.

The cafes will come back after all the wine bars are closed when France becomes Frankistan.

British pubs are also rapidly disappearing. Lots of them are being turned into airy fern bars serving white wine and quinoa. There is a brilliant pub near my son's home that's attached to a gluten-free brewery. I can drink half a dozen different kinds of beer and the food is fantastic. Yes, I have seriously considered moving there.

When I was in England the last time, I enjoyed going to pubs that sold "Courage" beer; I liked their "Take Courage" ad line.  What really amused me about the older pubs was realizing that they had that waist-high tile on the outside of the buildings to make it easier to clean up the vomit and urine left behind by their patrons.

The drinking dens are spilling out
There's staggering in the square
There's lads and lasses falling about
And a crackling in the air
Down around the dungeon doors
The shelters and the queues
Everybody's looking for
Somebody's arms to fall into
And it's what it is
It's what it is now

I can't say I ever noticed that, but it seems like a practical approach.

My funniest British pub experience was on my first visit in 2001-2002. My daughter's HS marching band was in the Lord Mayor's New Year's Day Parade and we made a family trip of it. Our wedding anniversary was December 28th, so we went out for drinks without the kids and ended up in a gay pub. There was nothing unusual about it except that I was the only woman in the place, and on the way out we noticed some free newspapers that were gay-oriented. Everyone was lovely, we had one drink, and went somewhere else.

“Clean up”?  Well, sure, I guess at the fancier places...
