The World Health Organization is out of its depth.

Has the Wuhan Flu destroyed the Biden Campaign?

For that time I was snowed in with the Oak Ridge boys in Amarillo, TX.

Greetings. Just finished a pretty delicious dinner of filet mignon, couscous and spinach salad. I decided to treat myself for getting through another week of this stuff. Had a nice FaceTime call with my little boy before his bedtime at his mom’s, he is his usual extraordinarily happy self. Now I’m starting to watch “the man who would be King“; it occurs to me that I’ve never seen this movie in its entirety, and even the bits I’ve seen were at least 15 or maybe even 20 years ago. I think I will sip a nice 10 year old Taylor Fladgate port while watching it.

i am looking at my time under Wuhan house arrest as an opportunity cycle through some of the wines, ports and other spirits that have been collecting dust in the cellar.

It's a good movie -- I saw it in junior high and have watched it with the kids several times.  My dinner was blacked mahi-mahi with black beans and yellow rice.

Stock up while there is time.

laugh at the people buying three and four cases of toilet paper and tell them they should stock up on the truly important stuff.

Don’t forget the chocolate. That is important too.

Viruses and why we don't have many medications for them other than vaccines, compared with bacteria

Viruses are not really alive. They are a protein shell containing DNA or RNA (COVID-19 is a RNA virus) They have no metabolism of their own.

The protein shell gets the contents into a host cell, where the DNA or RNA reproduces itself and makes more of the protein coat. The viruses are assembled in the host cell, and then released. Drugs can't target the metabolism, as it is the metabolism of the host, and that would be harmful.

Bacteria are living single-cell organisms. They have a metabolism that is sufficiently different from human metabolism for drugs to disrupt. They also have other features, like a cell wall. When bacteria reproduce by fission, the cell wall needs to be rebuilt, and many antibiotics target this process.

Note that if one cell gets infected by more than one of the same class of virus, it is easy for the genetic material of both to end up on the produced viruses.

I am not a doctor, nor a biochemist, but I sometimes play one on the Web. (Hey, I did get a 98 for the year in high school biology, and my family doctor (tells you how long ago that was) did everything but promise he could get me into Tufts medical school. ))

If this Wuhan Flu crisis pushes the nation into a full blown MaxMax civilizational collapse, bars of chocolate will be worth their weight in gold, or at least, in Gazoleen.

I am frankly kind of amazed that I’ve never seen the entire movie. I’m something of a Kipling fan and I like all of the actors involved in this flick. Why have I never watched it?
