Lucius, once I was rejected for a position because they "someone more qualified" They were still advertising the position a month later. I guess no one was more qualified than me.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 1: Then there was a position with a large software company you might have heard of, something like small and not hard, where they at the last minute canceled my interview, saying the position was eliminated. They still, however, advertised for it.

Lucius, my father was also stubborn - hated air conditioning, but could not tolerate heat. I set up an AC, but he wouldn't sleep in the room. Visiting nurse found him messed himself. Taken to one rehab, then another home. FIrst place, he wouldn't eat the food. Every weekend, I'd go to Rubin's kosher deli (now gone), buy a roasted chicken, cut it up, and bring it to the staff and they'd feed him that.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 4: The thing is, my mother passed away first - turns out she had been getting in the way of my talking to my father. My mother? She would seem an over the top stereotype of a Jewish mother on a bad sitcom. She was a travel agent of guilt trips. When she'd leave a message on the answering machine, you could see the guilt she was milking it for ooze out of the speaker. For an example of something that sounds a lot like her, check the Frontier.

And now that Passover is over, we have another memory of the exodus from Egypt: Leavened bread tastes like Manna, after a week of Matzah

Oh, it's nice that the "over" is finally in "Passover." Still got lotsa matzah, though. Lucius: Your mom broke her hip? Sorry to hear it; I hope she comes out of it well. My mother broke hers, recovered mostly, and then broke it again when the assisted-living attendants did not properly assist her. It was that second round that did her in.

I actually like the stuff; it's more the collateral anti-chometz restrictions that I find wearisome. Nonetheless, gonna have to have a lot of chicken soup in the next few weeks to crumble up leftovers in.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 8: She fell a month ago on her butt. She said she was fine except for tearing her skin (which is like tissue paper). I warned her that any fall like that causes a shock to the system in somebody her age (almost 93). Did she listen? Of course not. Not listening is a good Central Eastern European trait. This time she broke something -- I really don't know what and there is no one up there I can count on to give me anything like a clear answer. But, again, between the break and the shock I wonder if she'll ever come out of this. She's underweight, hasn't been eating properly for over a month, has some kind of blood condition that can't be diagnosed because she's not strong enough for a marrow test. So we'll see.

Reply to lucius septimius in 13: That's about how old Mom was when she recovered from her first break. She was still able to get around, with the aid of a cane and grab bars installed all over the place; it was the later TAVR operation---with added stroke!---that put her in the wheelchair. She was not underweight, but very much overweight, and with absolutely no body-core strength, which made her navigation that much worse. There are few good options when someone passes 90.
