Our 16 year old tiny poodle with a heart condition was coughing like he was trying to throw up something, and it was getting worse. Took him to the emergency vet. Congestive heart condition. Would have to stay in an oxygen tent. Decided it was the end. As they were preparing him, they rushed me in, he was going right then. At least he went without pain. Our other dogs knew something was wrong with him.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 2: Regarding "kosher locusts"---I maintain that the "kosher locust" is the one that has just devoured all your crops, leaving you with nothing else to eat.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 3: There was something in the Artscroll Interlinear Chumash on today's Torah portion that said that some community was eating locusts, but after a rabbi criticized them, saying they couldn't be sure that the locusts were kosher, so they stopped, they never had a locust infestation.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 1: So sorry to hear of your loss. Sixteen years is quite a run; but still not quite long enough. At least you could be there. I'm sure that was of great comfort to him.

Reply to Alice in Dairyland in 5: Last summer, we had a dog who made it to 18 put down. He was fairly healthy for a dog his age, but had a lot of neurological problems and would panic when he couldn't stand up. He had dogzheimers or something. He'd walk in circles, and get lost inside the house - couldn't figure out how to get out if he went between two pieces of furniture. After my wife thought he had a seizure because of his panic when he couldn't stand up, we decided his quality of life had gone. This dog was a little 5 lb one, and had been going downhill a long time. The slope turned into a cliff today. And yet he still wanted his food. (His favorite thing. He loved food) He at least went in peace. Emergency vet was busy. .I wonder how many vets are like ours - non-emergency visits by appointment only. Couldn't even go in until it was time - and then, I got to the waiting room, and they rushed me in because he was going. We made the right decision.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 6: "His Apologies" ---Rudyard Kipling
Master, this is Thy Servant. He is rising eight weeks old.
He is mainly Head and Tummy. His legs are uncontrolled.
But Thou hast forgiven his ugliness, and settled him on Thy knee...
Art Thou content with Thy Servant? He is very comfy with Thee.
Master, behold a Sinner! He hath committed a wrong.
He hath defiled Thy Premises through being kept in too long.
Wherefore his nose has been rubbed in the dirt, and his self-respect has been bruised.
Master, pardon Thy Sinner, and see he is properly loosed.
Master-again Thy Sinner! This that was once Thy Shoe,
He has found and taken and carried aside, as fitting matter to chew.
Now there is neither blacking nor tongue, and the Housemaid has us in tow.
Master, remember Thy Servant is young, and tell her to let him go!
Master, extol Thy Servant, he has met a most Worthy Foe!
There has been fighting all over the Shop – and into the Shop also!
Till cruel umbrellas parted the strife (or I might have been chok- ing him yet),
But Thy Servant has had the Time of his Life – and now shall we call on the vet?
Master, behold Thy Servant! Strange children came to play,
And because they fought to caress him, Thy Servant wentedst away.
But now that the Little Beasts have gone, he has returned to see
(Brushed – with his Sunday collar on) what they left over from tea.
. . . . . .
Master, pity Thy Servant! He is deaf and three parts blind.
He cannot catch Thy Commandments. He cannot read Thy Mind.
Oh, leave him not to his loneliness; nor make him that kitten's scorn.
He hath had none other God than Thee since the year that he was born.
Lord, look down on Thy Servant! Bad things have come to pass.
There is no heat in the midday sun, nor health in the wayside grass.
His bones are full of an old disease – his torments run and increase.
Lord, make haste with Thy Lightnings and grant him a quick release!

And our other 2 dogs have been subdued, but want more attention. They were sniffing the other dog with concern this morning (they can be seen on the other side of the pet gate). And now they want a lot more attention and one, who seems to want love more than food, took a long time to eat.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 14: :-( Our cat bonded with our 30 lb dog who we had to put to sleep in December. I think she still misses her buddy. They used to play and play.
