Reply to midwestgak in 2: I my kid showed me a "meme" - Tradition is just peer pressure from the dead.
I told him tradition is tough lessons learned and passed on so you don't have to learn them yourself.

In #3 JCM said: a "meme" - Tradition is just peer pressure from the dead. Is that a progressive idea put forth for all "free thinkers" to ponder? Hmmmm. Or is it Ohmmmmm? Learning the right way to respond is hard.

I told him tradition is tough lessons learned and passed on so you don't have to learn them yourself. That's pretty much what I try to tell my students when I explain to them elements of contracts/negotiation that I've learned, mostly the hard way, over the last 40 years or so. I tell them that I suffered so they don't have to---or, if they don't get what I'm telling them, I tell them that they should remember it anyway, because they'll remember what I told them after they make certain mistakes, and will say, "Oh, so that's what he meant..."

In #9 buzzsawmonkey said: "Oh, so that's what he meant..." Funny you mention that. I have that fantasy too. The twist is, did someone in MY past warn me too and I didn't internalize it? Funny because I was asking myself that while driving home today.
