I've been to McSorley's. I'm not fastidious, but they give new meaning to the word "filth."

In #2 lucius septimius said: Where is it? In the East Village, on 7th Street, between 2nd & 3rd Avenue, about half a block from Peter Cooper Union. They were defendants in a lawsuit about 40-50 years ago, because they would not admit women, and NOW, or somebody, sued to break their exclusion policy. I believe they stayed open all through Prohibition.
The beer's not bad, but it looks like they haven't dusted the joint since Repeal.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 4: When I was a little girl and my dad worked in Manhattan, he frequented the bar/restaurant at the Prince George Hotel, which I believe was around 23rd St. (Sadly, it later became an SRO, though I don't know its current condition.) It was very masculine and clubby, lots of dark paneling and leather booths. In the early '70s it had only recently begun admitting women, let alone little girls, and I adored it. My dad had a favorite waiter named Manuel and he thought I was very peculiar because I ordered strawberries with no cream or sugar.

Reply to doppelganglander in 7: I used to go to 78 rpm record swap meets at the Prince George Hotel, about 40 years ago, with a now-long-dead friend of mine. Picked up a few nice items there, and was able to turn over a stack of aluminum radio-master disc of early-'30s Vincent Lopez performances for a nice profit.

Reply to doppelganglander in 7: In my adult visits to NYC (which have been very few) I've had drinks at the Stanhope (where I saw Pierce Brosnan) and the bar at the Roosevelt Hotel (where I had drinks with John Fund and other members of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy).

Reply to lucius septimius in 10: I haven't been to either of those. In fact, I haven't been to New York since...2008? I went to the Cloisters and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The visit before that was for my oldest daughter's 16th birthday. Among other things, we had brunch with two of my Jeopardy friends. Sadly, I just learned today that one of them passed away.

Speaking of shellfish, a few years ago, a kosher Chinese restaurant was found to have cameras in the ladies' room. One owner was implicated. The place was allowed to stay open, but the perp was to have no connection to it. Part of the reason was that it was pointed out that for those allergic to shellfish, only a kosher Chinese restaurant is safe. All others have various shellfish sauces in dishes you wouldn't expect to contain them. (Take a look at the frozen PF Chang meals in the supermarket - most have oyster sauce)
