In #9 Occasional Reader said: I had exactly the same NPR-in-the-car-surely-this-is-parody experience only a few weeks ago, when they were interviewing some author of a book for children about a transgender... caterpillar, or some such thing; and the author opined that during this pandemic, it's super duper important that we remember to respect everyone's preferred pronouns; prompting approving noises from the interviewer. Yes, because that's obviously the top priority in a pandemic. So what is COVID-19's preferred personal pronoun?

Okay, the data breaches are a known factor for internet data security... and YOU WERE NOT READY??? WHY THE FUCK DO YOU STILL HAVE A JOB! Around 2002, I got a computer security certification. It lapsed in 2004; wasn't worth the money given the lack of interest in the industry for hiring people who know security. Equifax, another case. I think companies AND GOVERNMENTS that do not use current security practices should be strictly liable. Washington State should have to make that money up to the feds - out of the pockets of the government, not the taxpayer. Anyone involved in hiring the idiot gets minimum wage and the rest of their pay goes to Uncle Sam and the people scammed. My computer security knowledge is now somewhat out of date - there is way too much to keep up on. Which reminds me - the Secretary of State needs at least a dozen computer security experts to keep email and systems safe. Clinton had one system manager. You need experts in physical security, OS security, every server (email, web, etc) security, firewall experts and so on. No one person can keep up on all that! And that was back in 2002 that I found I couldn't, despite being otherwise unemployed. Just the number of security alerts for each specific server type is enough to keep someone going crazy.

Someday, I would like to be on a civil jury in such a case, but I'd be dropped like a hot potato because I know too much about the field.

Well, Ben Grimm, "The Thing" from "the Fantastic Four," was explicitly Jewish, in the actual comics.
Jack Kirby's "Superman" was also "Jewish" in that his Kryptonian name was "Kal-El," which can be read either as "Colel," i.e., "community," or "Kol El," which would mean "all God."

Watching the launch attempt of the crewed Dragon capsule. I was surprised by the reliance on touch screens. Some critical system you want a switch, something you can see and feel and know what position it is in. Something which breaks or completes the circuit. A touch panel has too many fault points. The touch screen, the screen, the software processing the touch, then sending a signal to a another system to cause the actuation to break or complete the circuit.

Every so often, my credit union also requires verification. Even Facebook - I got a code I hadn't requested to reactivate my account. I think a lot of Washington State people need to have their SSN's painted on billboards.
