When my dad was in the navy they would have periodic leave on atolls in the Pacific. A fellow would come and sell beer to the enlisted men, but there were limits. My dad didn't drink beer, so he made money selling his shares. As he said, when it's 100 degrees and the beer is warm, why would he want it?

Reply to lucius septimius in 1: My father traded cigarettes for other items, like chocolate. He didn't smoke.

On the unemployment scam losses - the problem isn't security in the unemployment system, but that scammers have enough data from OTHER data breaches to impersonate those eligible and have the money sent to them. Equifax, you need to pay up.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 3: In WA it is the system not being robust enough. It accept claims from known email systems used by scammers to set up a burner email account. It never flagged multiple payment going single bank accounts. The WA system did no verification checks, if scammers had personal info the WA system just sent the money.

Massachusetts has apparently done better, but is forcing claimants to wait for further ID checks. That is bad for them, but understandable.
