I didn't find this out until this morning that Marco Rubio may be tapped to be secretary of state for Trump. I'm not sure how I feel about that. He's been on the senate select committee on intelligence and has let the government do everything it wanted to do. Surely Trump wouldn't choose him, right?

And now for something completely different: What is your take on the Fermi paradox? Because Scott Pinsker is writing about it, wondering if we're the bad guys in the universe.

We aren't a high enough civilization to be the galactic or intergalactic bad guys. On the Kardashev scale we are a 0.2 on our best day, we can't get out of low orbit, let alone decimate another civilization.

As to other intelligent species finding us, even imagining sci-fi technologies, them getting around to this star system is problematic itself. Imagining faster than light travel is one thing, developing it in reality a completely different matter.

I'm reminded of the Twilight Zone episode "A Small Talent for War".

Election boards only have to be "on deck" with working voting machines, clean voting rolls, etc., every two years or so. Yet there are always "difficulties" with the vote count, "voting machines that are down," and "questions" about the accuracy of the voter rolls.

They have one job. They have, quite literally, years to prepare for "opening night" when their work is essential. And I cannot remember an election cycle in the last 20 years where they did not fail to perform their essential function.
