My Fourth of July playlist.
The song “The House I Live In” was, I believe, written in part by Earl Robinson, the same guy who wrote “Ballad for Americans.” Paul Robeson, the lead voice in “Ballad,” also recorded “The House I Live In” as a single. Though Robeson, and, I believe, Robinson, were Communists, the Communists of the late Depression/early WWII era were a lot more patriotic than a lot of supposedly middle of the road folks today.
Harold Arlen, who wrote the last song, also wrote the famous songs “Stormy Weather” and “Ill Wind” (the followup), and collaborated with Yip Harburg to write the songs for the film “The Wizard of Oz.” Like Irving Berlin, he was a cantor’s son.
