In #7 JCM said: The Russian President admitted in May: "It turns out that we don't have enough potatoes. I spoke with [President of Belarus] Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko. He said, 'We've already sold everything to Russia'."

Boy, the Russians have lost the ability to handle propaganda.

"Good news, Comrades! The potato ration is going up to 2 lbs a month from 1 Kilo!"

(To save the trouble, 1 Kilo = 2.2 lbs)

Trump wins again in the Supreme Court

The case centered on whether the Trump administration’s handling of mass layoffs during his tenure violated any statutory or constitutional protections. The answer from the court was a resounding “no.” The majority opinion, rooted in a clear-eyed reading of the law, made it plain that the left’s endless attempts to criminalize Trump’s every move are not only legally bankrupt but also politically tone-deaf.

The order overturns an injunction by Clinton-appointed Judge Susan Illston that blocked reductions in force (RIFs) across multiple federal agencies. Illston had ruled Trump’s executive order likely unlawful, claiming it needed congressional approval.

Even Justice Sonia Sotomayor sided with the administration on this case.

...

The only dissent came from Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

And Jackson's dissent in this case (the only one) was so notable that Sotomayor pointed out the problem with it

Yemen’s Houthi rebels attack another ship in the Red Sea, killing 3

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea killed three mariners and wounded two others, a European Union naval force said Tuesday, highlighting the danger of the group’s renewed campaign targeting a key maritime route for international trade.

The attack on the Greek-owned Eternity C follows the Iranian-backed Houthis attacking another vessel, the bulk carrier Magic Seas, on Sunday in the Red Sea that they said subsequently sank. The assaults are the first Houthi attacks on shipping since late 2024 on the waterway that had begun to see more ships pass through in recent weeks.

Time to smack the Houthis hard and take out Iranian ports.

Air India jet's fuel switches in focus, as crash preliminary report nears

The investigation into the Air India crash is focusing on the movement of the engine fuel control switches following an analysis of the 787's flight and voice data recorders, along with a simulation by Boeing of the aircraft's final moments, one of the sources said.

The fuel switches are located on the central pedestal just behind the throttles. The require the switch to be pulled out, then moved. They require a significant amount of force to pull, so a loose piece of clothing or a clipboard or something can't actuate them. They are also separated by around 5-6 inches. To turn the fuel switches to OFF would require a deliberate act.

It may be surprising but the switch likely survived the crash intact enough to be physically examined.

Another article reports no indications of fuel contamination, which was my leading theory.

I know the exact switches you are reffering to. You can see them in many aircraft cockpits.

Now, if they were moved, was there something on the voice recorder sounding like aloha snackbar?

Moving them would be on the both the data recorder, and the cockpit voice recorder.
They use multiple microphones in the cockpit as well as the headsets for the voice recorder. They have a neat trick. A switch being actuated will arrive at different times to the different mics and they can then triangulate which switch.

If one of the pilots moved them to OFF there should be a WTF!!! On the voice recorder.

I see two possibilities.

A computer fault which commanded fuel shutoff in both engines, that would appear in the data recorder as the fuel switches being set to OFF.
Possible? Of course but highly unlikely given the multiple systems involved and fault tolerance, error checking etc....

Deliberate action. We've had pilots crash airplanes before. Evidence for that would be on the voice recorder.

Going back to an early supposition of mine. Maintenance issues being the cause, but India not being willing to lose face over that finding. Would deliberate action by a "rogue" pilot be for acceptable than a system maintenance problem? I tend to think so.

You may be so riveted by the bloody mess that you don't notice the orange thing on the top of the picture. That's right: it's topped with a flaming marshmallow.

(I saw Flaming Marshmallow open for the Cranberries at the Filmore in 68.)
