I strongly recommend anyone who has not done so to read Pau Fussell's excellent essay, "Thank God for the Atom Bomb."

It doesn't shy away from the death and destruction caused by the bombings, but it makes the important point that it was the second bomb, not the first, that brought about the Japanese surrender---and that terrible as the bombings were, they saved not only thousands of American lives but many thousands of Japanese lives by making the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands unnecessary.

Let me tell you how it will be
One bomb for you, Nagasaki

'Cause I'm the fat man
Yeah, I'm the fat man

Should one bomb appear too small
Be frightful; it destoys all
