Typical issue with new technology. An early company not necessarily the first or the best figures out how to get the market. Saw it with oil companies, phone companies, online retail.

Right there are 3 commerical Satellite internet companies. Hughes Net the oldest, Viasat and Starlink the biggest. Hughes and Viasat use geosynchronous satellites. Latency is a issue for them and for that reason they can't do direct sat to phone without a special sat phone. Amazon Kuiper has about 150 birds up now. They'll need over 1000 to actually start service. Amazon beats Starlink in 3 areas, latency, bandwidth and the tie into AWS.

AWS already handles a lot of secure government traffic, through GOV CLOUD, Kuiper is building the satellites to meet government security requirements for data transmission. Starlink doesn't have the terrestrial backbone like Amazon does.

Will satellite cell phone service pose a challenge to existing phone companies? Maybe? Cost will be a big thing. Some will want the sat service just for status symbol. Business folks who travel it will be a necessity to keep up. I've now worked in ITAR/EAR jobs for almost 7 years. Travel with those restrictions is a headache. Now of the restricted data can be on travel devices, and the networks used while traveling. An approved phone and network service would ease those headaches.

Will Starlink dominate for awhile? Most likely. Will other companies challenge, yes. Will government agencies make fools of themselves trying to regulate the new technologies absolutely.

Hegseth rails against 'woke,' lays out standards in speech to top generals, admirals

"The era of politically correct, overly sensitive, don't-hurt-anyone's-feelings leadership ends right now," Hegseth said at the gathering at a Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia -- a secure site an hour south of the nation's capital.

Hegseth called for "no more division, distraction or gender delusions" in an extraordinarily blunt speech on the importance of the "warrior ethos," a term he uses to describe the spirit that makes combat units effective.

Another messed-up thread. Looked fine earlier.

I can directly connect to the database using SQL Management Studio; a bit rusty on SQL commands but I will see if I can reproduce the problem.

If I can see what is going on, I can get an idea of what needs to be fixed.

To really foul things up takes a computer.

Thanks for the time and effort you put into this!

I'm in the position where there are things I KNOW that happened because I lived through them, but you can't find that information in any search engine. Things like people falling from the World Towers on 9/11. That's just one example. I've done dozens of searches where I KNEW that the information used to be different, but the PowersTM have already changed the search engine results.

I'll bring this up again. Both Kirk and the Dallas ICE shooting used Mauser 98 rifles. Both wrote on messages on their ammo.

I found one article where this is noted but obliquely.

The weapon’s vintage design echoed another recent attack: the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, where a similarly basic firearm was used.

But not that ammo was used for notes. Why is this "coincidence" being downplayed? It's this type of crap that feeds conspiracies.

I tried uploading a fix and it did not work. Got errors.

Fortunately, I had the sense to back up the original files first, so restoring it took only a few seconds.

If I can get my version working, I will upload it on the weekend in case there are problems

Kosh, it just looks like the entries aren't retaining the date creation tag, and then the page isn't loaded the comments in date order to support that numbering. But that's me blowing hot air when I know next to nothing about web coding with databases.

The database query most of the time returns the posts in order but not always. Need to add OrderBy to the query to force it. But need to make sure everything works first

Everything You Need to Know About the Iowa Superintendent Whom ICE Busted

Key graph here:

How is it possible that not a single person working in the Des Moines school district knew Roberts was in the country illegally? I was under the impression that to work with children in any capacity, you needed to pass a background check. Wouldn't his previous charges have shown up?

...

And what's worse is this isn't something only happening in Des Moines. A news site in Erie, Pa., Go Erie, also reported that Roberts ran the Mill Creek School District before the board hired him in Des Moines. He worked in school districts located in St. Louis, Baltimore, D.C., and even the Bronx.

I think it's pretty obvious if any of them did a background check (which I doubt they did), they decided to sweep it under the rug. The fact that he didn't have a permit for the gun he was carrying just seems like the cherry on top.

Who here thinks this will help in any way at all? Bueller?

Adam Raine, a 16-year-old Orange County, Calif., high schooler, committed suicide in April after a horrific series of exchanges with OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform. Later, Raine’s parents sued OpenAI, claiming that ChatGPT provided all of the information the teen needed to kill himself, and they further alleged that ChatGPT encouraged the boy to commit suicide. The platform also encouraged him to keep his plans a secret from his family, the suit claimed.

In response to the lawsuit, the company said it would institute certain protections for vulnerable users, including added protection for minors under the age of 18.

In the wake of this tragedy, today, OpenAI is launching a number of parental controls and platform protections specifically centered on improving online safety for ChatGPT users. These include:

    • Parents with ChatGPT accounts can have their children’s accounts connected to their own.
    • The OpenAI platform will monitor any questionable or suspicious activity and notify parents if necessary.
    • OpenAI is developing an age prediction system to help it determine if a user is under 18 so that “ChatGPT can automatically apply teen-appropriate settings.”
    • The teen account will automatically have reduced access to graphic content, viral challenges, sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay, and “extreme beauty ideals.” The parents will have the option to modify this setting, but the child cannot change it.

This is still depending on the AI to do the right thing, when it has clearly shown that the ethical subroutines already in place are insufficient. This isn't a programming problem alone. And this is assuming that kids won't lie to set up accounts. Yeah, right.

Musk is making another market shift (story buried in another story about YouTube paying Trump off for cutting him off their platform in 2021 but sourced from Reuters:):

WASHINGTON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's SpaceX said Monday it will buy wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar (SATS.O)

The spectrum purchase allows SpaceX to start building and deploying upgraded, laser-connected satellites that the company said will expand the cell network's capacity by "more than 100 times."

Gwynne Shotwell, president and COO, SpaceX, said the deal will help the company "end mobile dead zones around the world... With exclusive spectrum, SpaceX will develop next-generation Starlink Direct to Cell satellites, which will have a step change in performance and enable us to enhance coverage for customers wherever they are in the world."

Concerns I'm reading about this plan include concern that the government won't have control over cell communications, calling it an opportunity for "the company is positioning itself to replace every other mobile operator with a service that operates entirely beyond national jurisdiction."

On the other hand, it is still consolidating power (potentially) in one company and person who says he supports free speech but still has demonstrated a willingness to support restricting it on occasions. And I can see the possibility that some entity like the US or even the UN will say such a company is "too big to fail" and then take over it a decade down the road.

JCM, would love to get your thoughts on this.

A superintendent works with kids. The background check is more intensive than working at a 7-11. At the very least. he has to fill out the I-9 where his SSN and birthdate are verified. If that wasn't done the school district needs a rectal exam, if he had a false SSN more the better. At the very least the school district was so eager to check a DEI box they failed their due diligence.

Huge ball of wax there. The big companies tend to lean leftist. I think this a self-defense mechanism. The left as been so aggressive against companies they adapted and final got co-opted. When I was at Amazon I was surprised how many at Amazon were "anti-corporate".

Part of the distributed conspiracy we know how many come out "elite" schools go into government on a mission to "make changes". I bunch also went into the corporate business with the same intent.

Now we have AI being run by a bunch of people with an Agenda. The agenda keeps revealing itself.

We have a vast number of students relying on AI to get through school. The thinking capacity is demonstrably decreasing. The multiplying effect leftist in education and AI is demolishing the ability to think without the input.

I don't trust elected officials to do anything sensible they are so ignorant of technology.

That leaves prophets of caution crying out in the wilderness.
